My booking email didn’t tell me where to go?
All walkers who booked a place will get a detailed email the week of the walk for each stage, telling you where the starting and finishing points are, what time they need to be checked in by and extensive walker’s notes explaining the route and points of interest.
If you haven’t received this email please feel free to reach out to us.
Is transport provided?
Yes. For each stage, you will park at the end point of the walk, and a bus will take you to the starting location in the morning. This way, when you finish the stage, your vehicle is waiting for you.
Is food provided?
At the end of each stage, light refreshments will be available at local community halls. Some light snacks will be provided at the walks starting point.
However, you should bring your own packed lunch and snacks to keep your energy up during the walk. There is a scheduled lunch break at each stage’s half way point.
How long are the stages?
Each stage varies in length between 18 km and 21 km. Here’s a breakdown:
- Stage 1 – Cashel to Cahir (21 km)
- Stage 2 – Cahir to Goatenbridge (18 km)
- Stage 3 – Goatenbridge to Mount Melleray (20 km)
- Stage 4 – Mount Melleray to Lismore (20 km)
- Stage 5 – Lismore to Aglish (21 km)
- Stage 6 – Aglish to Ardmore (21 km)
I’m a solo walker. Will I be part of a group?
Yes! Many participants come alone, and St. Declan’s Way is a welcoming experience where solo walkers quickly find company. While some people walk at their own pace, others form informal groups along the way. There are also volunteer stewards throughout the route, so you’ll never feel isolated.
What kind of footwear do I need?
You’ll need sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. The terrain varies from paved roads and gravel paths to forest trails and mountain tracks, so waterproof footwear with good grip is highly recommended.
Can I go at my own pace?
Yes! This is not a race—you are welcome to walk at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We do have cut-off times to ensure everyone completes the stage safely, but there’s plenty of time to enjoy the journey without rushing.
Do I have to complete all six stages?
No, you can sign up for just one stage or as many as you like. Some participants complete the full 120 km pilgrimage, while others choose specific stages that suit their schedule or fitness level.
Are the walks guided?
Yes, the walks are guided.
How much does it cost?
- €45 per stage
- €250 for all six stages
This includes bus transport, steward support, water stops, and refreshments at the end of each stage.
What happens if I need to pull out mid-walk?
We have a support vehicle available to anyone who finds them unable to complete the walk and people on hand to help walkers make their way to the support vehicle if required.
